We all know someone who seems to catch every bug going around. One person in the office gets a cold and, somehow, they have it two days later. The children bring something home from school, and they are the first one in the family to come down with it. Then some people seem to sail through winter, barely noticing what everyone else is coughing about.

Why are we so different?

There isn’t one simple answer. Our susceptibility to infection can be influenced by many things: previous exposure, vaccination, age, sleep, stress, nutrition, underlying health conditions and how well our immune system is functioning at a particular time.

But the idea of individual susceptibility is also particularly interesting from a homeopathic perspective.

Homeopathy looks at the person, not simply the name of the illness

Imagine three people all develop a cold.

The first person is freezing, exhausted and wants to stay curled up in bed.

The second is restless, anxious and can’t seem to settle.

The third feels miserable and wants constant reassurance and company.

They may all have what we’d casually call a cold, but their individual experiences are quite different. This is one of the first concepts students encounter when they begin learning homeopathy:

The diagnosis matters, but so does the way the individual experiences it.

A homeopath may ask about thirst, temperature, energy, sleep, appetite, mood, what makes the symptoms better or worse and even what happened before the illness began. It can initially seem like an extraordinary number of questions! But those details help build an individual symptom picture.

Why does one person become ill after stress?

This is another fascinating area to explore. Most of us have experienced periods when we are run down. Perhaps we’ve been working too much, sleeping badly or dealing with emotional stress — and suddenly we seem to pick up everything. That doesn’t mean emotions magically “cause” every infection. Infectious diseases have biological causes. But our general health and circumstances can influence how well we cope with challenges. Homeopathic case-taking therefore considers the broader story alongside appropriate conventional diagnosis and medical care.

This is where studying homeopathy gets interesting

At first, you may learn a handful of remedies. Then you begin asking a much bigger question:

Why this person, with these symptoms, at this particular time?

And suddenly a simple cold becomes an exercise in observation, individualisation and understanding. That’s when many students realise just how much there is to learn.
