Sunny days, beach walks and family holidays are some of the best parts of summer. Sometimes though, a little too much sunshine can leave the skin feeling red, hot, sore and uncomfortable. Homeopathy can be a lovely support alongside sensible sun care and hydration, especially in mild cases of sunburn.
The most important step is always prevention:
• Avoid strong midday sun
• Stay hydrated
• Wear protective clothing and hats
• Use appropriate sun protection
If sunburn does happen, some homeopathic remedies are traditionally used to support recovery and comfort.
Cantharis
Often considered when the skin feels intensely burned, blistered or very sensitive to touch. Cooling applications may bring relief.
Belladonna
Useful when the skin appears bright red, hot and radiating heat, especially after sudden sun exposure.
Urtica urens
A remedy often linked with stinging, prickling skin and minor burns.
Apis mellifica
May be considered when the skin feels swollen, pink and sensitive with a stinging sensation, especially if cool applications feel soothing.
Simple home care can also help:
• Aloe vera gel
• Plenty of water
• Resting out of the sun
Homeopathy looks at the individual reaction rather than just the sunburn itself, which is why remedies may differ from person to person. If symptoms are severe, blistering is extensive, fever develops or a child becomes unwell after sun exposure, medical advice should always be sought.
